Solitude, big rainbows are the reward for trekking to Kenai refuge’s wilderness …

After drilling three holes within the ice, I scooped out the slush and went again to the primary gap drilled. It was about 30 yards from the financial institution, the opposite two drilled at 10 and 20 yards. As soon as my collapsible chair was located the right distance for the rod tip to hold over the opening, I sat down and pressed the button on the reel and launched the one-ounce, silver Syclops lure to hunt the underside.

As the road paid out, the extent wind pawl traversed the face of the reel, as soon as, twice, and stopped simply shy of the third, about 30 ft down. Lifting the rod and dropping it three fast occasions to thump the underside, I cranked the reel a few turns to get the lure off the underside and began jigging.

With the promise of latest water and new fish, I lifted the rod tip a few ft after which let it drop in speedy free-fall. Envisioning the lure darting forwards and backwards within the method of a wounded fish, my hopes have been excessive. After the eighth drop, it appeared the fish have been greater within the water column and my consideration turned to my subsequent transfer.

Two extra, I assumed, and I am going to attempt at 20 ft. The lure went down on the ninth journey and slammed down onerous, the rod tip going into the opening. After which the fish was gone. Needed to be a rainbow — nothing hits these huge spoons beneath the ice like a rainbow.

The journey had began with a search of the map encompassing an space designated as wilderness within the Kenai Nationwide Wildlife Refuge. Bordered to the west by Swanson River Street and the north by Swan Lake Street, it is a huge chunk of floor dotted with freshwater lakes and small streams.

The wilderness designation precludes using any type of energy gear, like energy ice augers, chain saws, snowmachines or airplanes. To fish these lakes, you have to get there underneath your personal energy. There are few trails to comply with.

Some stock was completed on a few of the lakes years in the past and suggests most include both rainbows or char. Some have each. There are sufficient lakes that you can spend a lifetime and never see all of them.

The lake I selected was about three miles off the street and, most essential, had a small outlet stream that flowed to the Moose River, which flows to the Kenai River and has a moderately giant salmon run. A few of these salmon, principally silvers or reds, discover their solution to these backcountry lakes to spawn. Spawning salmon means salmon smolt, and there aren’t a whole lot of issues that rainbows and char wish to eat extra. They usually get huge doing it.

The map confirmed some extent of land…
