BRUNSWICK, GA. | The Sidney Lanier Bridge over the Brunswick River has been closed due to falling ice, Glynn County stated.
There was a serious construct up of ice on the bridge throughout Wednesday’s winter storm and, with temperatures warming into the 40s Thursday, giant items of ice are melting and falling onto the roadway, the county stated in a press release.
Due to the hazard to motorists, the Georgia Division of Transportation closed the bridge instantly late Thursday and stationed Georgia state troopers on both aspect to cease visitors, the assertion stated.
The 4-lane bridge has a tall superstructure with giant Kevlar-coated cables that maintain the concrete bridge deck into place. It carries visitors on U.S. 17 to attach Jekyll Island and Exit 29 off Interstate ninety five with Brunswick.
The DOT has not stated when it should reopen the bridge.
