Grand Forks Central High kicks off its building centennial

The constructing centennial occasion, timed to coincide with Homecoming, launches a yearlong celebration of the historic milestone.

Marian Corcoran Strom, of Grand Forks, a member of the Class of ‘forty seven, attended the occasion that honored the varsity’s historical past—and took her again in time. Coincidentally, she had simply acquired a photograph, she stated, taking from her purse an image of herself with two classmates, Rose Aasen Greenberg and Sylvia Hagen Hanson, sitting on the steps of the varsity’s west aspect 70 years in the past.

Throughout this system, fond and humorous reminiscences about academics and coaches—some who have been current, others remembered vividly—have been plentiful.

Dana Sande, a member of the Class of ‘ninety one and Grand Forks Metropolis Council president, recalled “arguing with Dr. Larson, my calculus instructor, the deserves of whether or not I belonged in his class or not.”

Tootsie Gasparini, a ‘sixty six alumna who helped plan the centennial celebration, described the strict gown code, particularly for women, in impact within the ’60s.

The massive diploma her father, LeRoy Nelson, earned in 1924 was displayed close to the rostrum. Her father, her six siblings and three youngsters all graduated from Central, stated Gasparini, a member of the varsity’s Instructor Corridor of Fame.

Principal Buck Kasowski learn from a printed program that was distributed on the faculty’s dedication in 1917. “This constructing is devoted to the impressionable younger individuals who can be educated inside its partitions,” he learn.

Longtime coach, Mike Berg, shared ideas he’d acquired in a letter from Andrew Towne, a 2000 alumnus who was unable to attend. Towne is considered the one North Dakotan to scale Mount Everest.
