Gordon is Alabama National Guard's first female leader

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) – A lady, for the primary time, has been named the brand new chief of the Alabama Nationwide Guard.

In a change of command ceremony Saturday on the Guard’s headquarters in Montgomery, Maj. Gen. Sheryl Gordon was acknowledged. Gov. Kay Ivey introduced June 17 that Gordon would exchange Maj. Gen. Perry Smith, who’s retiring after 6½ years within the publish.

Al.com stories Ivey stated through the ceremony that, “Typically, you understand, the perfect man for a job is a lady.”

Gordon formally takes command Tuesday.

Gordon was commissioned as a second lieutenant within the Alabama Military Nationwide Guard in 1981 and has served in a number of command roles all through the state.

She holds bachelor’s levels from Birmingham-Southern School and Auburn College and a grasp’s in schooling administration from Auburn College at Montgomery.
