Ex-DeVry dean to probe for-profit colleges; critics pounce

WASHINGTON (AP) – Schooling Secretary Betsy DeVos has employed a former official at an embattled for-revenue college to go the company’s unit investigating fraud at for-revenue schools.

Julian Schmoke Jr. is a former affiliate dean at DeVry College. The choice to rent him has prompted criticism from Democrats who say he cannot be trusted as an goal investigator, given his business ties.

Chris Murphy – a Democratic senator from Connecticut – tweets: “This can be a joke, proper?”

Murphy weighed in Tuesday after the story was first reported by Politico.

The division’s announcement Thursday about Schmoke cited his expertise and stated “he ensured the supply of a top quality schooling to college students” at DeVry.
